What is NRLM?



NRLM stands for National Rural Livelihoods Mission. It was launched in June 2011 by the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. It is now known as Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM).


Objective:

NRLM aims to reduce poverty by enabling the rural poor to access gainful self-employment and skilled wage employment opportunities. The mission focuses on empowering rural women by promoting self-help groups (SHGs) and nurturing them into strong community institutions.


Key Features:


Formation of SHGs and their federations


Access to credit and financial services


Skill development and capacity building


Promotion of sustainable livelihood options


Support to existing livelihood activities like agriculture, animal husbandry, and small enterprises



The mission works on the belief that poor have a strong desire to come out of poverty and they have the potential to do so when provided with the right support.

What is ASRLM?


ASRLM stands for Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission. It is the state-specific implementation of NRLM in Assam. ASRLM was established in 2011 and functions under the State Rural Livelihoods Mission Society, Assam.


Objective:

Just like the national mission, ASRLM aims to empower the rural poor in Assam, especially women, by organizing them into SHGs and building their capacities to improve their livelihoods.


Key Interventions:


Formation and nurturing of SHGs and Village Organizations (VOs)


Financial inclusion through bank linkages


Livelihood promotion in agriculture, non-farm sectors, and skill-based employment


Market linkages and enterprise development


Special focus on inclusion of marginalized communities



Impact:

ASRLM has brought thousands of women into the fold of organized self-help networks, enabling them to start micro-enterprises, access formal credit, and become key contributors to their household income and community development.
